Thomas J. Watson, nato a Campbell, piccola cittadina dello stato di New York, è il padre fondatore dell'azienda. Qui ne ascoltiamo la voce in una registrazione del 1911. Il testo in inglese è il seguente

"And we must study through reading, listening, discussing, observing and thinking. We must not neglect any one of those ways of study. The trouble with most of us is that we fall down on the latter -- thinking -- because it's hard work for people to think, And, as Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler said recently, 'all of the problems of the world could be settled easily if men were only willing to think."

La sua traduzione:

"Dobbiamo studiare, leggendo, ascoltando, discutendo, osservando e pensando. Non dobbiamo escludere nessuna di queste modalità di studio. Il nostro problema principale è che falliamo nel mettere in pratica l'ultima modalità, il pensare; perché è un duro lavoro, per la gente, pensare. E, come ha di recente dichiarato il Dottor Nicholas Murray Butler, -tutti i problemi del mondo potrebbero essere facilmente risolti se solo gli uomini avessero la volontà di pensare"-.

THINK, ovvero PENSARE, è lo slogan creato da Watson e che ha accompagnato l'azienda fino ad oggi.

Padre della IBM, dicevamo di Thomas J.Watson. Questa "canzone aziendale" del 1931 sembra fornire una conferma a questa immagine. Il titolo è Ever Onward, ovvero Sempre Avanti; meglio: Sempre al passo con i tempi. Il testo in inglese è il seguente, dal quale emergono frasi roboanti come: "Il nome di T.J. Watson evoca un coraggio che nessuno può arginare" "Servire l'umanità è il nostro destino" "La nostra reputazione risplende come gemme" "I nostri leader noi riveriamo . e mostriamo al mondo cosa noi pensiamo di loro" "Sempre avanti, sempre avanti IBM"

The corporation known in every land.
We're here to cheer each pioneer
And also proudly boast
Of that "man of men," our friend and guiding hand.
